BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the growing recognition that diet plays a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to provide calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other papers, the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture risk. Another recent paper explains that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk as well as risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just released this past month showed that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had lower odds of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower osteoporosis odds, decreased risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Pure Chiropractic finds these new studies very interesting to share with our Concord, NC chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests staying away from sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not easy!
