Concord, NC CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It’s a deep muscle and typically considered a back muscle as it stretches from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum produces lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Several bridge-type exercises are being studied as to how they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and prevent back pain. (6) Pure Chiropractic and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Concord, NC chiropractic visit to Pure Chiropractic.
